Spring 2020 – Morton College.
Announcements.
March 20, 2020.
SOC 101-1C: Reminder – Demonstration Lecture and Discussion Board Today (Friday, March 20) 9:00-9:35 – Virtual Office Hours 1:00-1:30pm.
Good Morning SOC 101-1C,
This is just a reminder of the following information that I sent out in the last course announcement (sent out the afternoon of March 17th).
For information regarding Midterm Exams and alternative Presentation procedures (including rescheduling), see the March 17th announcement).
Morton College has provided a “Blackboard Collaborate: Quick Start Guide for Students,” and it would be helpful if you would review it.
“Blackboard Collaborate” is the video/lecture platform for the delivery of on-line content.
It is Spring Break, so there is no obligation to participate in/attend either the demonstration lecture, or answer demonstration/experimental discussion forum question.
1) Discussion Forum.
I have set up a “Discussion Forum” for the class on Morton College Blackboard, and there is a link to the Discussion Forum from the course “Continuity Page 101-1C.” Currently I have plans to use the “Discussion Forum” as a substitute for attendance and participation in lecture. I am currently developing more detailed guidelines for the Discussion Forum, and will be providing those by tomorrow (Wednesday, March 18th) late morning.
2) Blackboard Collaborate (Video Virtual Office Hours and Virtual Class Lectures).
I have set up a “Blackboard Collaborate” video platform to host video based Office Hours and Virtual Class Lectures.
This week, I have set up experimental Office Hours and Virtual Class Lectures, in order to test how the system functions, and troubleshoot any difficulties that students may have using this platform.
There is a link to the “Blackboard Collaborate” video platform from the “Continuity Page SOC 101-1C.”
I understand it is Spring Break, so there is no obligation to log in during the experimental sessions this week.
However, it would make the first official on-line class meeting on Monday, March 23rd go easier on all of us, if some students logged in during the below times.
A) SOC 101-1C: Lecture Session 1 (Experimental) – March 20, 09:00 – 09:35.
B) SOC 101-1C: Virtual Office Hours (Experimental) Friday, March 20, 01:00 – 01:30pm.
That’s it.
See you on-line either today, or Monday, March 23rd, during normally scheduled class time.

SOC 101-1C: Course Update and Continuity Preparations (for Conversion to On-Line Version of Course after Spring Break).
Good Afternoon SOC 101-1C,
I wanted to give you all an update on course status, and the “Continuity Preparations (Conversion to On-Line Course Format)” for the resumption of class (on-line) after Spring Break, on Monday, March 23rd.
1) Midterm Exams.
Thursday (March 19th) early evening, I plan on having all grading done on the Midterms you took in-class last Friday (March 13th).
Upon request via e-mail I can provide you your numerical grade starting Thursday evening (for example 91/100, which would be an A).
Starting Friday (March 20th) I will begin scanning the exams, and upon request I can send you a scanned Adobe .pdf version of the exam with grade and comments.
By Monday morning (March 23rd), I will send out scanned versions of the exams to all of my classes.
On Friday (March 13th) afternoon, I picked up all the exams that were taken at the Make Up Examination Center, and I will also be grading those according to the above schedule.
If you were sick and missed the exam, I will be contacting you individually to determine how we will administer a make-up exam.
Continuity Preparations (Conversion to On-Line Course Format).
1) Presentations.
All presentations currently scheduled during the suspension of Morton College “face to face” classes have several options for completing the assignment.
At this time “face to face” classes are scheduled to resume March 30th, but there is a possibility that the closure may be extended – be sure to check the Morton College Panther Portal (my.morton.edu), and/or your Morton College frequently to stay up to date.
For presentations scheduled for the week of March 23rd, students have the following options.
1A) You can create a “narrated version” of your Powerpoint or Google Slides slide show. Instructions will be provided on the “Continuity Page 101-1C” and I have also added an instruction video to the course Youtube Playlist. After you create the slideshow, e-mail it to me, and then I will assign you a grade. If you are not planning to do a slide show for your presentation, you can use a webcam, or cell phone cam, to record a version of your presentation, and then you can e-mail the file, and I will assign you a grade.
1B) Presentation can be rescheduled to the weeks beginning April 13th, 2020. I am going to refrain from rescheduling presentations earlier than that date because, as I said above, there is a possibility that the Morton College suspension of “face to face classes” may be extended.
2) Discussion Forum.
3) Blackboard Collaborate (Video Virtual Office Hours and Virtual Class Lectures).
A) SOC 101-1C: Virtual Office Hours (Experimental) Thursday 10:00-10:30.
B) SOC 101-1C: Lecture Session 1 (Experimental) – March 20, 09:00 – 09:35.
C) SOC 101-1C: Virtual Office Hours (Experimental) Friday, March 20, 01:00 – 01:30pm.
4) Paper Assignment 3.
Paper Assignment 3 Guide will be distributed, via posting on the Assignment Page of the SOC 101-1C Blackboard site, on March 27th.
I will send out an announcement when I post the Paper Assignment 3 Guide.
We will discuss Paper Assignment 3 during the Virtual Lecture on March 27th.
Paper Assignment 3 is due, Friday, April 10th, via e-mail, on April 10th at 11:59pm.
That’s it for now.
Stay safe and healthy.
Contact me via e-mail if you have any questions.
See you soon on-line.
